The smog in this photograph is enough to make you cough. It's no wonder we used to have filthy shirt collars, and black snotters.

In winter, when low pressure settled over the city, so did the smoke and fumes from a million coal fires, and thousands of factory chimneys.

If you can see through this reek, we're actually at the corner of Argyle Street, looking up Union Street. That single storey Burtons, on the corner, was soon to vanish for the creation Rio Stakis' Vega restaurant, now the Cathouse nightclub.

You can almost hear the clip-clop of the horse's hooves on the old granite setts.
