Cars had superseded horses by 1953, but you still saw plenty of four-legged friends in the city, mostly pulling carts. You didn't often see someone riding a gig through Royal Exchange Square, although no-one here seems to be batting an eyebrow.

The concierge - perhaps he was the doorman from the Gay Gordon restaurant (today's Di Maggio's) - seems ready to give the couple a salute.

Do this today, and you'd send pavement drinkers and diners scattering in all directions.
