Bright lights, big city...

It's 1938, and the neon-lit canopy of Sauchiehall Street's Locarno Ballroom has attracted Glasgow's dance-mad youngsters like moths to a flame. Behind the scenes, things aren't so glam, with this high-angle view revealing that the tops of the canopies were littered with stepladders and old signage.

On the bill this night were Ella and Ruth Myles 'The Wondergirls' - a pair of highly flexible acrobatic dancers who could put their bodies in near-impossible positions. YouTube them if you want to see the girls in action.

And, if you failed to get a lumber, you could always console yourself with a solitary supper in the venue's 'Balcony Cafe'.

Strange to think that, within a year of this photograph being taken, the lights would dim for six long years of war. Mind you, even Herr Hitler didn't manage to put a halt to the jigging.
