Cary Grant was on a semi-secret mission when he touched down at Renfrew Airport in 1958.

As well as attending a screening of his latest film, Indiscreet, at Sauchiehall Street's Regal Cinema (now the ABC music venue), he was also doing research for his next big screen role, playing a submarine commander in the wartime comedy HMS Petticoat.

When the crowds vanished, Grant nipped up the road to the Faslane Naval Base, to experience life as a sub-mariner.
