New Year 1945 was a fairly bleak time for these two wee angels.

The family were living in a condemned tenement in Portland Street, in Laurieston, but, despite the obvious privations, the two girls look clean and happy, in their best dresses.

Portland Street, developed in the early 1800s as part of Glasgow's newest, upmarket residential area, soon fell out of favour with wealthy residents, with the once fine townhouses and tenements subdivided to provide cheap accommodation for Glasgow's working poor.

By 1945, the buildings, well past their sell-by date, were being squatted and occupied by desperate families, happy to find anywhere to lay their heads, no matter the conditions.
