Wartime austerity couldn't stop the Glasgow Fair dash doon the watter - neither, it seems could it guarantee good weather.

This long snake of holidaymakers reached all the way out of Central Station, along Gordon Street, and down Hope Street, all waiting to board a train to the coast, or further afield.

We know it's wartime as, if you look to the upper windows on Hope Street's Central Chambers, they are protected with paper sticky tape, to prevent big shards of glass from flying if the building took a direct hit.

The nice thing is, that lovely wooden sign, with the word 'carriages' swapped to 'vehicles', is still in situ. Where once horse-drawn Hansom cabs would pick-up and drop-off well-heeled passengers under the station's ornate cast-iron and glass canopy, today it's a stramash of black cabs and Uber drivers.

And, spare a thought for all the carriages that weren't outgoing, all the shy and retiring carriages? Where were they meant to go?
