There was a tram-a-drama-ding-dong in Union Street in 1955, when a blown fuse at the city's Pinkston Power Station cut the electricity supply to all the caurs.

With nothing moving, the passengers took to their feet, leaving the drivers and clippies to blether in the street. Perhaps they were having a whip-round to get a shilling for the meter!

This picture also affords us a glimpse of the former Peacock's tearooms, now the Royal Scot pub, and Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's soot-blackened Egyptian Chambers, which have now been wrapped in scaffolding for so long that I'd almost forgotten how magnificent they are.
