I used to love these electronic city maps.

This one, in St Enoch Square, was unveiled in 1957 - and they made quite an event of it; swathing the new arrival in heavy velvet curtains, and employing a member of the Corps of Commissionaires to pull the fancy, tasselled cord to reveal the map. Mind you, I'm surprised that he was still puffing on his pipe as he did the honours. Most unmilitary!

I loved these things as a kid, pushing as many of the wee steel buttons as possible, to see how many lights I could illuminate.

The wee building in the background was one of the city's first tourist information bureaus; ideally placed for those out-of-town visitors arriving at the adjacent St Enoch Station.

The map, and the tourist kiosk, would vanish in 1959, for the building of a new Arnott Simpson store.
