If jaywalking were an Olympic sport, Glaswegians would be gold medallists.

Maybe its a throwback to the days when we had to dodge the traffic to get on or off the trams, but roaring lorries and busses hold no fear for the citizens of Mother Glasgow.

One one occasion, I saw a wee granny, complete with headscarf and shopping trolley, facedown a whole flotilla of honking and tooting lorries, waving her stick at the drivers in thanks as she reached the other side of the road.

This picture, taken in 1961, shows the charge of the Green Man brigade, when even a turning lorry can't halt their onward advance.
