There was no shortage of thirsty customers when Glasgow got its first Children's Milk Bar in 1937.

The brainchild of the Scottish Milk Marketing Board, the shop came in response to fears that children weren't getting enough calcium during the school summer holidays. Soon, four milk bars were operating in the city, selling kids subsided milk at a ha'penny a bottle.

Trouble was, they proved too popular, and when the schools went back in September 1937, they all shut down.

This motley crew of kids, both inside and outside the shop, all grubby chops, skinny legs, and knobbly knees, look like they could do with feeding up. Even the dug looks a touch on the hungry side.
