Glasgow Cross was a hive of activity in 1929, as work pressed ahead on the completion of the Art Deco Mercat Building, and the unveiling of the city's new Mercat Cross, which replaced an earlier one, removed in 1659.

The Mercat building was designed by A. Graham Henderson, while the Cross was the work of Edith Burnet Hughes, considered Britain's first practising woman architect, having established her own studio in 1920.
