It's July 1946, and, with the war over, Glasgow had its gladrags on and was enjoying the shows on the Green.

The Glasgow Fair's earliest incarnation occurred in 1190, when Bishop Jocelin obtained permission from King William the Lion to hold an annual summer market. With the city thronged with visitors, the Fair soon became just that; an excuse to play and party.

With the arrival of heavy industry, the fair transmuted into the city's annual holiday, and, if you couldn't afford to go off doon the watter, you could always enjoy a day visiting the carnival on the Green.
