This decorous 'carriage attendant' was the man in the know at the city's Central Hotel. In the 1950s, Jimmy Cawley was the go-to guy for advice on what to see and do in Glasgow - and he could magic up a cab with just a click of his fingers.

Seen here in December 1956 - there's even a light dusting of snow on the ground - Jimmy is wearing his winter coat (hope he had his long-johns on underneath). He also had a lightweight summer outfit. And, while his cap badge read 'Central Hotel', his collar embroidery read 'Carriage Attendant' - a linguistic throwback to the days when well-heeled hotel patrons really did arrive, and depart by horse and carriage.
