It's October 1958, and Glasgow has launched a battle against parked cars.

We're looking south down St Vincent Street, where wealthy, car-owning commuters used to be able to park right outside their offices. The new restrictions helped cut the amount of precious metal by the kerb.

The street, incidentally, isn’t named after any of the various St Vincents, but after Cape Saint Vincent, in Portugal. The name marks the victory of a British fleet, under Admiral Sir John Jervis, over a larger Spanish fleet, under Admiral Don Jose de Cordoba Ramos, on February 15th, 1797, in one of the opening battles of the Anglo-Spanish War (1796-1808), as part of the French Revolutionary Wars.
