Laughter, they say, is the best medicine, but not when it comes to combating the polio virus.

Ken Dodd, ever the entertainer, knew that a spoonful (cube) of sugar would make the medicine go down when, in the 1960s, he met these little ones at the children's clinic in Glasgow's Bridgeton.

Dodd, then one of Britain's biggest stars, used his UK tour to help promote the then new oral vaccine against the debilitating virus. The result? No more jaggy needless, and lots of little, happy faces.
