It was a cold and treacherous trudge to work for these folk in the winter of 1950.

The arches on either side of the former Royal Bank of Scotland, leading to Royal Exchange Square, have long provided the perfect framing device for city snapper.

The snow-covered newspaper bills, on the right, belong to William Porteous and Sons, once one of the city's top newspaper and map shops. As well as all the UK titles, they stocked newspapers and periodicals from across the world, and also sold French and Turkish cigarettes.
