The Bridgeton 'umbrella', seen here in the 1930s, has long provided a covered, central meeting point for locals; a place to chat, take the wait off your feet, or just watch the world go by.

The octagonal cast iron shelter and clock was manufactured by George Smith & Co at their Sun Foundry at Port Dundas, and gifted to the city in 1875.

Sometimes used for political meetings, it was also a favourite spot to meet up ahead of a visit to the adjacent Olympia Cinema, or a trip into town from the nearby Bridgeton Station.
