Ok, so they're not quite One Direction, but this was what passed for a boy band back in 1957.

Dressed in sensible flannels, woolly jerseys and white shirts - there must have been a sale on at the City Cash Tailors - Muir Laurie's Skiffle Group were as clean cut a bunch of lads as you could hope to meet. There wasn't a tattoo or a pierced ear in sight, which was just as well as, had there been, there mammies would have walloped them. As it is, we suspect the lad who's snaffled his mammy's washboard is already in for a leathering!

Inspired by Glasgow's own 'Skiffle King', Bridgeton-born Lonnie Donegan, these lads were at the cutting edge of what was to become rock 'n' roll.

Although Elvis had released six hit singles the previous year, the Memphis boy's whoops and hollers hadn't quite filtered through to these Glasgow music fans.

All together now: "Well it's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready..."
