It's the end of the working day, and this quartet - the 'four must-hae-beers' - are off for a pint or two in John Thomson's pub on Rottenrow. And, believe me, once you'd climbed up North Portland Street, you'd earned a pint.

Photographed in March 1951, I love the long shadows, the ancient cobbles, and the two guys lurking in the pub doorway.

Being situated just along the road from the old Royal Maternity Hospital, we bet this boozer was the 'wetting the head' spot for generations of wee Glaswegians, with nervous but delighted new dads digging deep in their pockets to buy beers for all and sundry.

Sadly, despite hunting in all the usual places, I've been unable to find out much about this venerable old howff, except for the fact that, in 1866, it was home to wine and spirit merchant Neil Campbell.

Today, Strathclyde University's Wolfson Centre sits on the site of the old pub.
