If today's Kelvingrove Park skateboarders think they are doing something new, they are sadly mistaken. Glasgow's cool kids have been skating in the park for decades.

This skate-park was opened in 1951 to replace a dance area which had fallen out of favour. Both occupied the site of the former Kelvingrove House, which served as the city's first museum and gallery.

Skating was often a family affair, with mums and dads booting-up to guide wee ones around the rink. And here were no fancy in-line skates for these daredevils; it was leather and metal, four wheels, and a wee metal key to make sure the skates fitted over your shoes. Twisted ankles, optional.

And, once you'd had enough, you could always sit and watch all the action, and accidents!
