There's always something new to see at Kelvingrove. Back in 1919, this whale skull became one of the latest additions to the museum's internationally famous collection, which has continued to grow every decade.

Although we can't be sure, we suspect this might be the skull of a Northern bottlenose whale, one of the deepest divers of the world's oceans.

Although, today, whales are protected, for generations they were hunted for their oil, which was used for everything from oiling the wheels of industry, to domestic lighting, and even hair products.

Looking on, apart from the member of museum staff, is Sir Roger the Elephant; the tragic pachyderm who saw out his short life at Bostock's Scottish Zoo, in the old Cowcaddens.
