Nobody was quite sure what had landed in Buchanan Street, in 1977, when sculptor Neil Livingstone's abstract work 'The Spirit of Kentigern' was unveiled to a curious public - was it a bird, a plane, or just a big lump of bronze?

In reality, the abstract statue of a bird depicted the story of Glasgow founder St Mungo, also known at St Kentigern, who was said to have restored life to a robin - the 'bird that never flew'.

The statue sat outside Fraser's department store until 2001, when it was removed to a council yard. After that, it enjoyed various outings - once being spotted in the Briggait.

Today, it sits outside the new City of Glasgow College, close to the Allan Glen entrance to the campus.
