Did you know Glasgow used to boast its own Albert Hall?
Better known as the Albert Ballroom (with Joanna's Discotheque in the basement), it's the white building, sandwiched between St Matthew's UF Church, left, and Renfield Free Church. I think the City Bakeries van might be delivering snacks to the dancehall
Not sure when St Matthew's vanished, but it later served as an orthopaedic and rheumatic clinic, which must have been handy for any footsore dancers.
Renfield Free Church, beside the King's Theatre, was demolished in 1967.
The Albert Ballroom, originally the Warren Academy of Dancing, opened in 1905.
The ballroom was closed after a fire in 1953 but it soon reopened, with the band wearing firemen’s helmets. The Warren family finally sold the Albert in 1965. The new owners tried to keep up with the times by opening the popular Joanna’s discotheque in the basement, but the end came when the building was destroyed by fire in 1974.
Today, an office block occupies the entire site.
