There's three eras of industry in this brilliant but smog-filled image; canals, steam trains, and the electric age.

It was the arrival of the railways that put paid to the Forth and Clyde Canal, while the building of the Pinkston Power Station, in 1900, provided the electricity to power the city's trams. It's cooling tower, the largest in Europe, used to dominate the north side of the city.
