This was the scene outside Glasgow High Court in 1958, as the city hung on every word in the trial of serial killer Peter Manuel.

Odd as it might seem to us, the west end of Glasgow Green became the gathering spot with rubberneckers, some even bringing picnics, to hear the latest ins and outs of the 'trial of the century'.

It seems an odd, if not macabre attraction to drag the weans along to, but there's no shortage of prams, and even an Asian family soaking up the drama.

Manuel was eventually found guilty of seven murders - there may have been more - and was hanged at Barlinnie on the morning of July 8th.

His last words, as he was led to the hanging cell, were: "Turn up the radio, and I'll go quietly..."
