We're high above Hutchesontown, it's the early 1960s, and we're looking north west across Glasgow Green, and the Clyde, towards the mighty double spans of the old St Enoch Railway Station.

In the foreground, the land is being prepared for the massive Waddell Court multis, which still stand today. To their right, you can catch a glimpse of the now long-vanished Co-op bakery complex, in McNeil Street, once one of the biggest in Europe, turning out millions of loafs, buns, and biscuits for the hungry city.

Look across the Clyde, and you'll see another vanished beauty, the former bandstand and amphitheatre on Glasgow Green, with, to its right, a chequerboard of wee allotments. Looking to the left, you'll notice that the Doulton Fountain - the largest terracotta fountain in the world - was yet to be moved to its current site, outside the People's Palace.
