The event was an Evening Times sponsored Riverboat Shuffle in May, 1957, aboard the turbine steamer the Duchess of Hamilton. That's the George V and Central Station bridges in the background, meaning they are tied-up at the old sheds on Clyde Place.

The four-hour cruise featured a variety of trad jazz bands and skiffle groups playing for the 1800 passengers. It's strange to think of the sounds and rhythms of 1920s New Orleans blasting out over the waters of the Clyde

Scotland being Scotland, the trad types faced a soggy sailing, with passengers enduring a thunder storm. At the time, the newspaper reported: "For once the bearded, arty types found a use for the hoods of their duffles."

It also recorded that members of the Dundee Jazz Club came by car, which broke down at Stirling. They had it repaired, but it broke down again outside Glasgow where they sold it, at a profit, and finished the journey in a taxi. What the paper doesn't tell us is how they got home. For all we know, they may still be wandering the streets of Glasgow!

Although we can't put names to all the musicians, that's Maurice Rose, on soprano sax, and Norrie Brown on banjo.
