Looking back, it's hard to remember a time when 'Old Hooky' wasn't wearing his traditional traffic-cone hat. Indeed, in this snowy picture, taken in 1955, he could have done with a bunnet, and his Wellingtons.

The statue, by Italian sculptor Carlo Marochetti, was erected in 1844. Since then, the Duke has had more trouble with drunken Glaswegians than he ever did with the French.

And, as much as the UK media keeps claiming Waterloo as a 'British' victory, the facts speak for themselves. Only one third of Wellington's army was British, the rest was a grand alliance of Dutch and Belgians. And, if truth be told, it was the late intervention of Blucher and his Prussians (Germans) who helped carry the day.

The building in the background, on the corner of Queen Street and Ingram Street, sadly demolished in the late 1960s, was the Glasgow HQ of the British Linen Bank.
