There's really no messing about going on here, this is a serious business - it's the 1958 Glasgow Schools Rowing Regatta, by Glasgow Green.
In the days before football became a major sport, crowds of of to 80,000 would gather on the Green to watch and bet on the rowing races. Even in the 1920s, spectators would crowd the Green, and windows and rooftops of the tenements opposite to cheer on the rowers.
Back then, rowing was a common man's sport, with many of the city's big factories and engineering firms running their own amateur teams.
The good news is, rowing is still actively pursued on the Clyde, and this, the West Boathouse, is about to undergo a major refurbishment.
Further upstream, on the right, you can spot the magnificent towers and tall chimneys of the old United Co-operative Bakery Society. Once the biggest bakery in Scotland, it kept generations of Glaswegians stuffed with plain or pan.
I wonder what the old boy, dashing up the steps, is doing? Perhaps one of the eights is a man short, and he's off to change into his singlet and shorts, to take up an oar.
