It's 1954, and we're inside the old Antarctic diorama at Kelvingrove Museum, where this member of staff is trying to 'pick up a bird'. I hope he completes his task before that walrus turns on him!

As a small boy I both loved and hated these stuffed animals; loved them because it was a thrill to see them so close up, hated them because the poor beasts were dead, and so far from their freezing home. If memory serves, some of the dioramas allowed you to press a button to see the animals in their winter plumage.

Who knows the long and complicated journeys that brought these beasts to Glasgow.
