Back in 1955, after a day's fun in the park, there was little money to buy a bottle of 'ginger', and neither was there any need to, with free, fresh water available on tap.
With the arrival of clean drinking water in the city in 1859, piped in from Loch Katrine, Glasgow was proud to show off its engineering prowess, with public drinking fountains popping up all over the city.
The fountains, many cast by MacFarlane's 'Saracen' Ironworks, in Possil, were things of beauty, featuring a wee drinking cup on a chain - which often went missing!; a cast lion's head, and a lower drinking bowl, for any thirsty horses or dogs to dip their muzzle.
Free, ice-cold, fresh water for all to enjoy, with not a discarded plastic bottle in sight. Now, there's an idea worth resurrecting!
